Was I Samaritan or busy body?

“Be nice to people… maybe it’ll be unappreciated, unreciprocated, or ignored, but spread the love anyway. We rise by lifting others.”- Germany Kent.

This vehicle was parked on an unusual angle this morning as I pulled into the Callingwood Safeway Edmonton parking lot.. I wondered if it was an abandoned vehicle or if the driver needed assistance.

Curiosity might kill the cat but in this instance my innate curious nature drove me to to unravel the mystery as to why this car was parked so conspicuously bad in a mall’s parking lot.

I assumed one of two things: (1) the car had been stolen and abandoned here by the thieves ; or (2) the driver was experiencing a medical emergency and had parked this way to attract immediate attention. I eventually discovered both these suspicions were wrong.

I used my cell phone camera to snap a few photos of the car and as I stepped closer to it the driver side door popped open and a female  about 30 years of age jumped out of the car and asked me if I needed a parking space.

I thought she was kidding considering there were so many empty spaces around her car. I explained that I noticed the unusual way she had parked her car and wondered if she needed help.

She assured me she was in no need of being rescued or requiring assistance.

She had parked her car there because she had received an urgent text message and needed to respond to it in a safe place.

She was bewildered as to why I had approached the vehicle.

I told her I assumed she had some type of medical emergency and was prepared to assist her if she need required it.

She thanked me  and then drove away.

Sometimes being an almost good Samaritan feels just as good as the real thing.

  1. Good question – Samaritan or busy body? Only you know the answer to that one.

I’m trying to think what I’d have done in your shoes. In a large virtually empty car park such as this and parked so far away from the store entrance, it would never have occurred to me that there was anything wrong with the driver, I’d have probably mumbled ‘stupid woman’ and driven on by! The person would need to be sprawled on the ground before I realised there was something amiss! 😂
