Treats and sweets for the spirit

“Think what a better world it would be if we all, the whole world, had cookies and milk about three o’clock every afternoon and then lay down on our blankets for a nap.” — Barbara Jordan.

Yes Susan, there is a Santa Claus and holiday spirit!

Once again I am writing about the Advent Season and this time focusing on the  store displays that are created by staffers to bolster customer morale and spirit during the tension filled holiday shopping rush.

I chatted with a few employees who told me that many of the in-store displays are created to help brighten the mood and the demeanor of those customers who have become inundated and demoralized by all the Christmas hype, hoopla and hysteria.

The final few shopping days are before us. Tempers will flare as last-minute bargain hunters vie for parking spots, places in checkout lines and the “right” to be treated fairly and respectfully by store employees.

I kept an eye on the display in the above photo and noticed that folks who passed it tended to mellow out not only a I  was photographing the display but also as I chatted with them about their views of the holiday itself.

A number of them told me that the pushy crowds and at times the weather put hem into an emotional funk. They looked forward to those “fun-filled” displays that lifted their spirits and helped them feel young at heart again.

It seems that cookies and sweets and other Xmas treats has earned a place of respect in the spirit of the times.

It is better to bake a dozen cookies than act like a crumb during this time of the year.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!. — gc
