“Nibbling” after midnight a no-no

Many years ago I discovered the hard way that heavy munching after midnight might please the palate but also adds inches to the waistline.

As a student I worked in a warehouse and the job was physically demanding and involved walking about a large automotive warehouse picking everything from tiny “O rings” to car bumpers and batteries for dealership orders.

When I first started the job there was only a single shift  and work began at 7 a.m. and ended at 3:30 p.m. five days a week Monday through Friday. Working this shift involved lots of walking, lifting and carrying. Keeping the weight off was an easy task.

One summer a new warehouse was built and machinery enabled workers to drive about the new site which was as big as two football fields. You really needed to use the machines in the place to get around.

A second afternoon shift was also added to the roster. It began at 3:30 p.m. and ended at midnight. The shifts were two weeks in duration and this really wreaked havoc with a person’s sleeping and eating habits.

When I came home hungry after midnight I realized that a “light snack” was not in the cards and so mentally I told myself that I would be totally immune from gaining any weight. Right.

My harmless six p.m. supper menu was now transferred to an after midnight lunch which included steak, chicken, potatoes and the occasional ( every day) plentiful scoop of ice cream.

After a short time eating this way I one day noticed that my suit pants and slacks no longer fit the way they once did. When I eventually weighed myself I noticed that my weight had escalated appreciably .

My once hearty midnight lunch was now converted to a very , very light snack with no thoughts of dessert ever entering the equation.

Now that I am retired I still enjoy my meals but also am conscious about the amount of ice cream, cake ,cookies and ice cream I enjoy.

My eating habits have been controlled but I am still tempted to binge out on the occasional dish of ice cream, chocolate cake and almond cookie. – gc.

  1. I was at jury duty and talking with a woman who was retired. She said all she wore were elastic-waist pants now so did not have any ‘dressy’ pants to wear for jury duty. Clearly, being retired agreed with her. Now, pass that ice cream over here…. 🙂

    • I am grateful that blue jean manufacturers have place an elastic band in the waist area so that IF needed they can allow a person to enjoy a dessert and still be able to get into their slacks and shorts and of course jeans. And yes pass the ice cream this way as well Lois!! 🙂
